This month I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with a fabulous and very talented group of youngsters at Tucson's, The Drawing Studio. I marveled in their creativity, spontaneity, and fresh view of the world. They reminded me of what it was like to make art before the world of academics.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate my education to the fullest, I simply feel that the academic world can be a bit suppressing of one's creativity if that form of creativity does not fit into their definition of what art should be. What I discovered, or perhaps I should say rediscovered, over my two weeks of instructing them in bookmaking is that it's o.k. to be silly and have fun, it's o.k. to try new things and have them fail completely, and it's all art. :o)
